Happy New Decade
The framework for both top and bottom sculpture components are well underway at this point. The
rings that will support the bird forms are attached to the vertical armature elements, and I very likely
should have taken more pictures of that process as each step was quite a dance of temporay supports,
ladders and a small scaffold. But I guess I'm just enjoying being in the flow of the work too much
to be overly focused on documentation. My wife Clay has been coming out from time to time to take
these photos of me working so you can get some sense of scale.
To the left in the above picture you can see the wood frame I prepared to aid in the construction of the base.
The trick there was to be able to hold the stainless steel sleeves that the axles will drop into at the required
height and separation ratio to the base plate, and then run the substructure framing to suit.
3D drawing in steel. Once I have all the internal bracing in place I'll be sheathing with the stainless
sheets I picked up last week.
And finally, as I said in the email, I have the base plate template ready to ship out to facilitate acurate
anchor bolt placemant.
The bird shapes are due to be picked up sometime after the middle of this week. That was an adventure
unto itself learning to produce vector drawing files in a CAD friendly format that the laser cutter's computer
could read. As I mentioned in the previous update,Clay and I figured it out, with a big assist from another
tech savvy friend, Vicki. There was another chapter or two to the story, but Gherrilla Graphics -our in house
pet name for our seeming skill at visual problem solving - triumphed again.
Until next time
