Mike Roig, Sculpture
Spreading Her Wings
November 2018
Fabrication begins
The whirlwind of late fall has finally abated and after recharging the batteries it's good
to have a project like this to settle into. Step one, start drawing some patterns and
get the overall shapes sketched out. That's what you see happening on the further
collage of tables. On the nearer one the bearing setting is in progress. The foundation
for the kinetics starts there, with a good deal of creative and engineering thought
going into that aspect of things.
The flattened silhouette of the spinning form is drawn heavier to one side in anticipation
of the asymmetrical forming to come. This will make better visual sense later when I can
show rather than tell. But first, let's put a base to this sculpture and mount the bearing
setting.
At this point we have a definite dimension for the sculpture's footprint and
we can put design and planning energy into the concrete pedestal.
