Kinetic sculpture comes with the expectation that movement will be a constant element in the composition. These dancers don’t provide that form of entertainment, rather what I’ve come to appreciate about them is the surprising way they will shift orientation from one viewing to the another over time. They convey such a strong life like presence that I’ve several times been startled when crossing the yard to find them observing my passage when I would have sworn they had been oriented in another direction for days. They also have the habit of mirroring each other in that orientation so their combined effect is rather magical. Then the big winds will come and I’ve been enchanted with the way they ride those currents, some times bowing deep before righting themselves, and yet even with the simple engineering of gravity and balance and pivots they have handled the biggest gusts with grace.
